I just got back from seeing the MNfashion Boutique and was excited to see so many of my pieces on the banners in the store windows!

Star Tribune did a write up about the boutique and the opening reception next Thursday. Stop by the shop if you are in the Minneapolis area. I will be volunteering my time between 10-3 the next couple Thursdays this month, and Tuesdays in December. There are a lot of other great designers and I think my Holiday shopping will be quite easy this year. I particularly love the mohair/silk scarf by Rebecca Yaker featured with my skirt above.

Holiday Collection on sale at MNfashion boutique

Here are final photos of my Holiday collection on sale at the MNfashion pop-up boutique located in Gaviidae Common, 651 Nicollet Mall. First floor (near Saks). The boutique will be open from November 9th to December 31st. MNfashion will also host an opening reception on November 12, 2009 from 4-7 pm.

I'm liking the length I ended up on this skim top, now more of an actual crop top.

This top is still in progress, and may or may not be added into the boutique. I still have a little work to do on it and was ready to chuck it in the bin the other night. Check out the last photo for a better shot of the wrap skirt which turned out adorable.

I also have quite a few past collection pieces for sale at the Holiday boutique. I have worked hard to keep my prices as accessible as possible. For what it's worth, a lot of hours go into my work, so to me they are quite reasonable. Sizes are an average 4. Custom sizes are available upon request. No loss of love for anyone a larger or smaller size. I drape most of my pieces on form, and my mannequin size is an industry size 6 (vanity size 2 and an average 4.) I don't mass produce these, so you are assured of either a one of a kind piece or a handful piece vs. some mass produced chain gang piece! Buy local this Holiday season and help support the burgeoning Minnesota Fashion scene!

Holiday '09 Continued

With a little less than a week to finish my Holiday collection for the MNfashion pop-up boutique things are going mostly as planned. I feel like my speed has reached an all time peak, and I finally have the time to focus on my art. Now, if my irritable Pfaff sewing machine will cooperate. It has a mind of it's own lately and will switch stitches as I am sewing, increase speed, or a come to a dead stop. Crossing fingers that a trip to Associated Sewing Saturday will cure it's ills.

Regardless, I am extremely excited about how well my draped cotton jacquard skirt is turning out.

This is the pattern for the front of the skirt. The top of the pattern with the curving point is the CF which will provide the desired front drape. The waist is on the left of the photo with it's side seam about half way from CF. The circular cut of the pattern is essential to the drape of the garment.

Here is the initial drape pinned to the form once the pattern is cut. It is refreshing to work with a cotton for a change, as I tend to favor silk for draped garments. Luckily, the cotton is lightweight and drapes well. Here is the near completed skirt. I only have the front/back hem to finish and to sew a couple hook and eye closures. I am impressed with how the draping and construction of the skirt executed. This is the back of the skirt which has variegated pleating. You can see a bit of the front drape from the back. I keep changing my mind with each project, but right now this skirt is my favorite piece in the collection.

Holiday '09 Progress

Following up on my previous holiday collection post. Here are some photos of my designs in progress.

This is one of those patterns that was a struggle to get right. The bow was not big enough and not positioned correctly. I reworked this many times with the below photo looking the best.

Here is the pattern in fashion fabric. I tweaked the pattern to make the bow much larger. It is amazing how much fabric was needed just for the bow. I have used about 3.5 yards of fabric and will use more for bias bindings. After many test patterns, I am very happy with the results. The fabric is a gorgeous silk crepe de chine.

This shift dress was relatively easy to drape. The annoying part is finishing the neckline which is usually self bias binding. I am thinking I will have to take apart the pleats, sew binding, then redo the pleats. Fabric is a medium weight silk crepe.

This is a similar pattern that I did as a dress for my friend Harmony. She was shorter in the torso than my mannequin, so I added a bit of length. However, I am leaving this as a crop or skim top as I prefer to call it. It will look gorgeous over a high waisted skirt as shown in my previous sketch. Fabric is a silk charmeuse that I did an acid wash on to give a sueded, more casual look.

Here is a close up of the diagonal pleated pocket which turned out quite nicely.

Keeping with my current love of skim tops. Here is the pattern for the pleated neck top (sketch 4 in my previous post).

Here is the toile or test garment in cotton batiste. Typically I drape in the usual muslin, but had some leftover batiste. Such a great fabric to drape with, but a little too pricey for a test garment.

Here is the same top in the silk velvet I was lucky enough to score last weekend. Depending on the light, it is a true navy or more of a cobalt. It works perfectly into my palette. I have never sewn on velvet before, but the construction of the weave made it quite easy to sew. It is recommended to sew velvet between tissue paper and iron on a needle board. I did not need to do that on this type of velvet thankfully. It almost looks like seal skin or leather.

I posted something similar about 1930's Vogue Magazines a few months back, and I still I cannot shake the beautiful imagery from that era. I put this trend page together specifically for the gorgeous use of color and fashion illustration popular during the decade. I particularly love the muted or tawny colors paired with a shocking bright. This is something I plan to play around with in future collections. Also, notice the use of bold and unusual color blocking on some of the dresses. You rarely see color combinations like this anymore outside of vintage YSL or Lacroix. It looks really fresh and exciting for Spring 2010.

Textile Designs

In addition to my many hours spent as a fashion designer, I also clock quite a few hours as a freelance textile designer. I work with several studios and companies creating original artwork. As sort of a test, I am going to be creating a small selection of original artwork available for purchase. All artwork is created in Adobe Illustrator and in full repeat. I am sad that "Valentino: The Last Emperor" doesn't appear to be coming to the Twin Cities anytime soon. To tide me over until it does on Netflix, I am posting a few of my favorite photos from "Valentino: Themes and Variations." This book is a designer's dream. It not only has detailed mannequin shots, but also original magazine photos, sketches, and behind the scene snapshots. I haven't been too impressed with the collections since he has left, even if rumor has it he was still designing them. It is interesting to see the span of his work over the decades and how they have evolved, yet still remain timeless.

Vogue 1930's

A trip pouring through 1930's Vogue magazines at the Saint Paul Public Library yesterday inspires today's post. I tend to gravitate towards the 50's and 60's magazines during my visits, but thought I would try a new decade. I am glad that I did. These tears range from around 1935-1939 and what I am most amazed about is the bright, bold use of color during this time. I was especially drawn to the strong shoulder which is back in the forefront of fashion again. However, it is interesting to see the difference between the 30's and 80's focus on the shoulder. Not so much the linebacker look of the 80's, but more draped voluminous balloons, lanterns, and my favorite leg o' mutton. Designers at the forefront during this decade where Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Lelong, Chanel, and Patou.

Serge Lutens

Here is a sampling of my favorite images by Serge Lutens. Having created work for Vogue and Christian Dior, his most notable work was with Shiseido. You cannot look through the pages of Vogue or Harper's Bazaar from the 1980's and 90's without coming across one of his dreamscapes for the famous cosmetic company. Everything is so meticulously set up in the shot and the colors are so rich. It is obvious he worked with Richard Avedon and Irving Penn in his early days and was inspired by the great masters. The accessories are particularly stunning and most likely made just for the set. Although they do look surprisingly like something Andrew Logan would have done, I don't see a record of them ever working together.

Oh Boy!

I came across these rare photos of Boy George as a cover girl for Harper's Bazaar in the 1980's. The page layouts and color are truly amazing. I especially love the use of accessories and the matching make-up. I don't think anyone other than Boy George could carry off orange lipstick.

Favorites From The Goldstein Museum

Bill Blass paisley jacquard coat with front placket and decorative jewel buttons. The label says that this is for Maurice Rentner and sold at Dayton's Oval Room.

Geoffrey Beene geometric jacquard with leapord over print. I forget if these buttons are Chinese ball buttons, or molded plastic.

I love the whole coat with matching shift look of the 1960's. It just seems so elegant and yet versatile. The show piece is definitely the coat, but it is nice to shed a layer for comfort and still show off a great fabric or color.

This is a Schiaparelli that was so tiny it wouldn't even fit on the mannequin! Again, I love the simple zig zag pattern.

It's difficult to see the drape of the gown not on a form, but note the cowl neck front. The skirt portion of the dress also has a long extension that drapes to the side when worn.

Note the metal eyelet closure on the side of the dress. You see this on most of her dresses from this era (bad notes-30's?). This was before she started using zippers which was quite revolutionary when she did.

Vintage Warehouse U.K. Part 2

Here are some random favorites from my visit to the Vintage Warehouse in Bristol, U.K.

This dress is by U.K. designer Antony Price. You can check out more of his amazing work on showstudio.com

This amazing dress (or negligee?) is made of silk chiffon and has the most delicate rows of pintucking in front and back. Note the layered ruffled chiffon sleeves. It would be lovely worn over a cream bias cut dress. Very 30's.

Try not to be distracted by that shirt. Vintage Topshop. :) The top I am holding is a suede Jean Muir with dot cut-outs. I have seen Joanna Lumley (Patsy Stone) wear something similar when she modeled for Jean back in the day.

This fair isle sweater set from Bill Gibb was absolutely adorable in person. I am just assuming that it is all hand knitted due to the quality of the work and decade.

Cute little devore/burn-out number.

This dress looks like an Ossie Clark, but it is actually made by a Marisa Martin. I have never heard of her and cannot find anything online. Anyone?

Vintage Warehouse U.K.

During a collaboration with Topshop a few years back, I had the opportunity to go on a vintage shopping trip with the design team. The place was the Vintage Warehouse and at the time it was housed in Bristol. They were in the process of moving and the current location escapes me. Leeds perhaps?

The owners were a husband and wife team who started collecting in the early 1970's and some of the most amazing pieces were from Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren SEX days. They used to shop the store back in the day and were good friends with the owners and frequent customers The Sex Pistols! They also costumed several BBC television shows, one being my favorite fashion themed show "The House of Elliot." The space was huge and I was lucky enough to snap up some great pics during my visit.

Last season's Rodarte? No, the original SEX sweater with knitted "umbilical cord" included!

Tees from SEX are still copied and sold to be the real deal but seldom are. These tees are all the original as once worn by the owner! He told me how people caught wearing the Cambridge rapist tee were often arrested. Mainly because the tee was printed when the criminal was still at large. Now that takes real guts!

Oh Marilyn!

Here is a younger me discussing the history of these amazing tees with the very passionate owner. The tees were stuffed in an old plastic grocery bag!

Original bondage jacket from SEX. I got to try this on and wish I would have gotten a picture wearing it. How amazing it was to wear something so historic.

It's hard to tell what this is from the picture, but it is a mohair/pleather zip skirt that could also be worn as a top. Either way, it doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Fashion 2001

I was recently paging through an old book entitled "Fashion 2001" by Lucille Khornak." The book was published in 1982 and I bought it several years ago at a used book store on a whim. It was really humorous to me when I bought it because we had already reached the great 2001. Unfortunately, the future is not an elaborate Dynasty set at some space aged masquerade ball as the book would make it appear.

However, some ideas presented in the book have been tried or adapted in some form. Jean Paul Gaultier claimed we would all be spraying our clothing on like hair spray. Maybe for the fetishist with liquid latex, but hardly a mainstream idea today. Others spoke of the importance of activewear and t-shirt dressing which is of course right on. Jean Claude De Luca showed a jacket with a music player embedded into it which Apple and Nike have accomplished. However, his version was a cassette player and inflatable!

So maybe this book isn't a great resource for the future of fashion, but as a look back into early 1980's Couture it is very inspiring and right on trend. You can see many current designer's referring to the era in recent runway collections and designers such as Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaia getting some attention again.

These scalloped edges remind me of the recent Spring/Summer 2009 runways, specifically Christopher Kane's.

The Devoré heart printed fabric and colors are very Marc Jacob's S/S '09! Notice the ghost of Andy Warhol in the background? Well, I guess he was still living in 1982.

This is reminding me of something that I cannot put my finger on. I actually love the airbrushed parrot. Very Blanche Devereaux.

One designer, Mary McFadden you never hear about anymore. The high priestess of pleats. I would love to see a comeback of her work. These colors are so gorgeous and pure 80's Couture! It makes me want to go lie in a desert.

Skip the Spock hair and that torture device of a chair, but I adore the HUGE padded shoulders. The photo wasn't credited, but I would bet money it is Claude Montana.

Ground Control to Major Tom?

Great triangular cowl shoulders and hips. Two looks I have tried, but in separate pieces and in a much more drapey silk.

I love this jumpsuit and the return of them. This one is Bill Gibb who has also been making a comeback.

This concept of buying tubes of knitted fabric and cutting out the pre-seamed and marked garments by Scott Barrie reminds me of Issey Miyake's APOC collection. I have a piece from this collection and debated for days on weather to actually cut it out or keep it in tact. I finally decided to cut it out and it's such an amazing piece. I kept all of the scraps and instructions, but I am sure if this is ever a collector's item the value has been decreased. Oh well, It was so much fun cutting out and wearing with HUGE black palazzo pants!

If this isn't straight out of Alexis Carrington's condo, I don't know what is.

I don't believe very many people know that the Goldstein Museum on the U of M campus has such an amazing fashion collection in it's archives. Or, that the archives are open to the public by appointment. I have made several trips to the museum and spent the day sketching and photographing it's garments. The college is very accommodating and if you tell them ahead of time what you want to study they will set a rack of garments aside for you. Ask for a mannequin!

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from the Goldstein Museum. I took notes on everything I looked at but must have been too caught up in the moment to write down the dates. I have given a close estimate of each.

Balenciaga (Paris)

Double breasted yellow chartreuse wool coat with jet buttons. Early 1960's. This has a full boxy silhouette without and known shaping. The yoke is interesting because it isn't seamed into the shoulder seam, but cut to go over the shoulder as one with the back yoke.

I am surprised to see that the collar wasn't constructed with a traditional under collar, but the top collar was turned and sewn under. I wonder if the wearer had the shape of the collar changed at a later date.

Christian Dior (New York- for Stuart's)

Orange brushed wool princess line coat with plastic buttons (that do not appear to be original to the garment.) Late 1950's. This has a a fuller "New Look" skirt achieved with the princess seaming. French designers of the day would sell their designs to American stores to produce and sell. I believe this design was used by the house somewhere between 1955 and 1957, but I am sure this copy is later 1958-1959. Again, I am taking a stab at this because I don't have the actual dates.

Note the pocket flaps on the jacket which are not cut and sewn separately, but are formed from the yoke. The inside is just a simple slash/welt pocket.

Christian Dior (New York)

Wool and lurex tweed jacket with matching skirt. shell in reverse gold lurex and wool with decorative cluster ball buttons. 1960's. This piece is absolutely stunning in person. I love how chunky the fabric is, especially the shell's placket. This had to be very uncomfortable to wear because it was not lined in a separate fabric and the metallic/wool blend is very scratchy. However, a willing sacrifice to make I am sure.

Charles James

Black silk satin cape with bright yellow silk satin lining. I would guess Mid-50's. This was a very popular style by James and one that he repeated in various fabrics over the year's. You need to see this on a body or form to fully appreciate the piece and see how the collar drapes.

Note the triangular seamed yoke in back.

And how it is so expertly lined on the inside of the cape.

This sleeve is my favorite part of the cape because of the diagonal seam used to produce the cocoon shape. Usually the seam would be straight across on this style of sleeve. James used this sleeve on several other styles over the years.

Here is another colorway of the coat which I think is earlier than the one above, 40's is my guess. How interesting that his designs were so unique and timeless that they could be worn a decade later. Designers of the day would often make a special client the same style in a new fabric, but you rarely see them in print.

To read more about one of the most amazing American designers of all time (in my humble opinion) I recommend the book The Genius of Charles James which is not that bad of a price given it is over 30 years old.

Pre-Fall Collections 2009 (Part 2)

Reviewing the Pre-Fall Collections have been a good source of validation for my own line which I started working on this past Summer. You can check out my August blog post to see my collection for yourself. Currently, I have been working on refining my patterns and am still in the toile phase (muslin). I haven't decided if I am going to present a Spring or Autumn '09 collection. I feel like the collection I am working on is valid enough to work for either season given a few tweaks. This year has been totally crazy for me; leaving my corporate design job, Spring '08 fashion and trunk show, moving to Portland, working on my portfolio, three family/friend visits, a trip home, freelancing and constant networking. WHEW! Good thing the holidays are approaching.

However, I digress to continue with validating what I am working on and possibly abandoning some ideas for others. I am loving all of the blue and black showing up in the Pre-Fall Collections and the overall muted and dusty palette which I have always been a big fan of.

Vera Wang

Notice the little touch of sequins on the pockets, otherwise a very simple wool top coat.

Badgley Mischka

Granted this is pretty much one designer showing this, but look at all the dresses with multiple tiers! Again, check out my August post to show how I am working this trend.

The next two are excellent validation for my purples and plums. The first is a stunning concoction of feathers and flowers and the second in a delicately draped silk.

Donna Karan

One giant tier covering or being the whole dress. Gorgeous!

I've worked in silk jersey for awhile and love when I see it on the runways. This is a tricky fabric to get right. There are some gorgeous high quality silk jerseys that I have ordered from Mood Fabrics, but some I have seen can look cheap and clubby. Unlike, this simply draped Donna Karan dress with MORE feathers.

These next two dresses show the trend for muted/dusty tones and color-blocking the different shades of fabric together.

So, we will see where I end up with the current collection I am working on and which season it becomes. I have been working on another line that I think will be for Autumn '09 depending on where the first collection ends up. My recent posts of bright colors and the 60's are a hint, and I will post sketches of these in future updates.

Pre-Fall Collections 2009

So Far, the Pre-Fall collections do not seem to be offering up anything shockingly new silhouette wise. Designers usually play it safe and offer more accessible wardrobe staples during Pre-Fall and Resort collections. Granted these trying, sales slumping times do not help. However, these pre collections are usually a good gauge of what to expect for the upcoming Fall season which we won't see until next March. As the silhouettes appear to be more safe, the prints and fabrics are making the key statements this season. Most notable are the amounts of jacquards and brocades on the runway. From ikhat-esque geometrics to the more traditional paisleys and florals, this is a trend to keep on eye on. I love the classical photographic prints Burberry used which was inspired by an antique painting the designer recently purchased. This could be more of an exclusive trend, but stunning just the same. I also think lace is going to continue as long as it is large and graphic like a guipere or venice lace. The other print trend is animal, especially snakeskin which we saw a preview of for Spring '09.

When I lived in Saint Paul, I used to love spending Saturday afternoon's at the Saint Paul Public Library browsing through their numerous vintage Vogue and Harper's Bazaar collections. I swore to myself that I would go through each one and take photos of whatever inspired me. I didn't even get close to getting through their extensive collection, but I have started collecting my own vintage fashion magazines over the years. Ebay is a great resource of course, but my favorite source to purchase vintage magazines is Paper Pursuits. They have an enormous and amazing collection, especially of L'Officiel and other European magazines. Here is a mere sampling of my favorites images from my collection and the Library's. I will post more images in future blogs. Can you tell I am on a wool and bright color kick lately?

I have long had a fascination with designer Bonnie Cashin because of her bold and interesting use of color and texture, particulary in her wools. She is the genius behind Coach's legendery clasp and has inspired the release of their "Legacy" collection. Interestingly enough, The Bonnie Cashin archives are housed in Minneapolis, MN. Unfortunaltey, these archives are not open to the public and trust me I have tried to gain access. The foundation does have an amazing website at least which is full of images and information about this incredible designer.
